Year 7 History Examination
May 2018

What will my examination be set on?

Focus Topic: The Black Death
  • How did the Black Death spread, and what were the causes?
(from Asia, by trade routes, how it spread between people)

  • What were the causes of the Black Death?
(superstitious causes; movements of the planets, a punishment from God etc)

  • What were the main symptoms of the Black Death?
(fever, buboes, different types of plague; bubonic, pneumonic, septicemic)

  • How did people react to the Black Death?
(medical cures, superstitious cures, role of the Plague Doctor, burying of bodies, fearing foreigners)

  • What are the short-term and long-term consequences of the Black Death?
(The number of deaths in Europe, impact on population; decline in religion, rise of wages for peasants, the Peasants’ Revolt, decline in the feudal system, changes in social structure)

Type of Assessment
Your paper will have two sections:
  1. Source Inferencing (25 mins)
    1. You will examine a source on the Black Death. You will have to infer meaning from both picture and text sources.
  2. Mini-Essay (35 mins)
    1. You will have one long-answer question to answer.  This will be based on one-two of the syllabus points listed opposite.

How should I revise?

  1. Aim to be able to answer a short essay question on each of the above questions in the ‘Syllabus Points’ section, using the factors and events listed for each.  You will need to use the history sources and your own knowledge to answer in a PEEL paragraph format.
  2. Make sure you understand how to find information in a source and how to make an inference - you have done this many times in class, and should be able to identify key information from a historical picture or text.
  3. Use your class notes to help you revise
