Year 12 SL History Home Learning

In addition to the usual weekly homework of reviewing and consolidating your notes, your home learning will follow the sequence below. Your single lesson each week will be the hand in / completion deadline.

WEEK 1: ACADEMIC EXTENSION - READ, REFLECT & POST
(Due Week Commencing 13th Nov)

Picture
Click on the image to download an extract from 'In the Garden of Beasts' by Erik Larson. It is a biography of William Dodd's family, who arrived in Berlin in 1933 as a result of his appointment as the US ambassador to Germany. This extract is useful to us as it gives an insight into the day to day experiences of the German people during the initial consolidation of power, raising some troubling evidence about the extent of (and reasons for) popular support for the new regime. It also challenges our view that the democratic nations were necessarily troubled by the Nazi attitudes from the outset of their regime.
The extract focuses on the experience of Martha, William Dodd's daughter, who was in her 20s when she arrived in Berlin with the family.
1. You will need to post 8-12 lines on some or all of the discussion points identified in the forum post below (click on NLCS History and Politics Forums > 1. Y12 History Forum > 1. In the Garden of Beasts)
2. You should additionally add any interesting / new points raised by the reading / discussion to your own notes

WEEK 2: KNOW YOUR STUFF - FACT TEST
(Due week commencing 20th Nov)

This week's homework will be to prepare for a twenty-question fact test. The facts will all have been covered in your class notes - this test is not designed to be exceptionally difficult/ obscure, but rather to ensure that you have a good knowledge of the key historical facts. Spelling is important.

THIS WEEK'S FACT TEST TOPIC IS: THE RISE TO POWER OF HITLER AND THE NAZI PARTY

WEEK 3: REFLECTION AND ANALYSIS - PODCASTING
(Due week commencing 27th Nov)

This week's homework will be to create a 10 to 15 minute podcast about one of the topics that we have been studying. If you do not listen to podcasts, then get on to to i tunes (or equivalent) and listen to an example. Perhaps search for 'Hardcore History' or 'Ridiculous History' to start with.
Your podcast will be peer reviewed during the single lesson. Your teacher may also listen to some of them during this period and may give informal feedback. Once per term you will self-select your most successful which will then be formally assessed using the IB criteria opposite. Note that this rubric is based on IB assessment criteria and therefore will be relevant across subjects.

This week, the overall topic is 'How did Hitler and the Nazi Party Consolidate and Maintain power in Germany?' You will be allocated one of the themes below to be the focus of your podcast:
1. The role of successful foreign policy to 1940.  2. The use of Force/Fear (domestically)  3. The Role of Persuasion   4.  Case Study: The 1936 Berlin Olympics   5. Case Study: Nazi Movie Making    6. Case Study: Nazi Art   7. Historiography - how have perspectives changed?

WEEK 4: ESSAY PREPARATION
(Due week commencing 4th December)

This week's homework will be to prepare for a timed essay which will be completed during your single lesson. You will bring in a sheet of A4 lined paper with an introduction and conclusion already fully written. No other plan allowed. You will then have 40 minutes to complete the essay to time. The essay will then be marked in the same way that it would be if submitted in the final examination. The essay title you will be answering this week is:
To what extent was a successful foreign policy the most important factor in the maintenance of Hitler's power?
