3: Brazil and the Great Depression. How healthy was Brazil's economy in the 1920s?
The Depression brought home the realisation that many countries of Latin America had over-relied on a limited number of primary products for export. Many used the 1930s as an opportunity to address this problem by developing their own industries. Brazil was dominated by Getúlio Varga, who later became the dictator of Estado Novo. Vargas suppressed opposition, but did encourage industrial development. The later 1930s saw some impressive progress, particularly in steel production. A typical examination question would ask you to analyse the political impact of the GD on one Latin American country.
